Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology
Functions of the Department:
At the district level, the department is headed by the Assistant Controller.He has to ensure that the enforcement of the aforesaid Act and Rules are being carried out by the Inspectors. The Assistant Controller is assisted by the Senior Assistant in carrying out the paper works.The Inspectors are required to carry out the verification and stamping of the commercially used weights and measures, dispensing pumps and weighbridges. They have to also ensure that the manufacturers, dealers and repairers of the weights and measures have proper licences to carry out their work. They are entrusted with the duty of checking the pre-packaged commodities whether they conform to the Legal Metrology Act and Rules.Inspectors are assisted by the Junior Assistant for the paper works and by the Manual Assistant for carrying out the verification and stamping works.
Mandate of the Department:
- Maintaining uniformity and accuracy in all weights and measures, weighing and measuring instruments used by traders for commercial purposes.
- Regulating the trade in pre-packaged commodities by ensuring that such packages conform to the declarations, as well as the net quantity contained therein, as prescribed under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
- Implementing the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011 and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
